Egan's One Year Old

Our little bitty boy....

What a treasure this past year has been. Egan first arrived full of surprises and left us shocked. But his nature turns out to be quite opposite of his entrance style. Egan is universally described as a 'happy' boy. He's very much a people person and loves to interact with other people. He adores his big sister and her tribe of friends - always looking up to the other kids like Xander, Zeb, and Elena.

His early months were notably calm. For the most part he was content to observe and listen carefully the world. This earned him the nickname our 'little lemur' because his eyes were always bright and watching. He has more of a relaxed independence and a welcoming personality. Everyone comments that he is a 'happy boy' always smiling and engaging other people. He is relaxed around groups of people and likes to watch interactions. While calm, his personality is also very independent. He has a fearless attitude - his natural caution tempered by the fact that he's always watching bigger kids do things.

Now our little bitty baby is on his way to a bitty boy. He started to crawl this July and the world has opened up. Egan love to climb, into the dishwasher, up the stairs, onto stools. He seems to always quietly be working on getting higher and higher. His other favorite toys include a metal bowl and wooden spoon, pretend food (which he will pretend to eat), fridge magnets, and pretty much anything his sister has. He will climb the stairs dragging a wooden spoon and then turn around and smile at you. Egan is very adventurous. He will climb all over the big kids playscape at Elena's school. He will take off across the yard to try and reach the big kids before you notice.

One of Egan's little quarks is that he loves to head butt you. We call it baby bulldozering. He crawls up, leans against you and presses his head hard against you. Sometimes it is to be picked up or in anger (usually complimented with a bite on the calf - the little cannibal). But sometimes it is just to get your attention and give you a smile or show you something he's drug up (usually something really really interesting, like a huge dust bunny from under the couch).

Egan doesn't sign as much as Elena did -- it's hard to tell if that is his personality or that we haven't been as good about signing with him. He can sign milk (which he uses for want, more, milk, food - mostly a generic I want) and occassionally 'more' and 'bird.' He chirps but isn't forming words either. He will say mamamama - but it's more out of anger than 'momma.'

Egan had a slow start with solid foods. He seemed to really be 'ready' but after a few bites wouldn't continue and looked angry. Once we started pureeing our table food, he really took of with his eating. The first big hit was risotto. And it has just grown from there. Egan loves all kinds of foods, as long as they have a lot of flavor or texture. He likes fruits of all kinds; his favorite cooked veggie is broccoli. But he's also a meat and carbs boy - he will pack away biscuits and sausage like you wouldn't believe. He has 6 teeth and loves to use them on anything crunchy - like carrot sticks, apples, baked bread sticks, crackers, teething biscuits.

Bottles didn't used to be a problem (unlike his sister), Egan always took a bottle very well. But this summer during the big transition we didn't have much opportunity for a bottle (mistake) and he's adamant that he won't have any milk unless straight from the source. So, he is still nursing several times a day.

Everyone says this before you have your second child, but you don't really believe it until it actually happens - they are really different. I think one of the most amazing things about Egan is his relationship with his sister. Elena was mostly surrounded by adults as she was a baby and toddler. Egan has had his sister since day one. He loves her very much and will crawl up and give her cuddles and pets. She gives him hugs and kisses (sometimes these look like tackles, but in any case...). Of course they are a bit after each others things. Egan wants nothing more than whatever small object (ie choking hazard) that Elena has. And Egan can grab a fist full of Elena's hair very quickly. It amazes me the joy they find in each other. No one can make Egan laugh like his sister.

Jake and I were reflecting on this past year, Egan's first year. It seems that when Elena was born, our whole universe shifted and then paused. We were very stable and could spend that year focused on becoming parents and her. This year we had a whirlwind of job interviews, major life decisions and moving. Plus we had an older sister. So sometimes it feels like this year slipped a bit away from us. We treasure every moment with our bitty boy. And if we haven't spent as much time 'recording' our lives, we've spend even more time living. Jake and I were able to arrange our work so that one of us was home every morning with Egan - we could take walks around Brown's Farm, cuddle in the sun, take naps, and just be together. We know we are so lucky to both have had that time together with just him.

Physically, Egan is still literally a bitty boy. We don't have a local dr., so I can't give official stats - but he's still wearing 9 mo clothes and doesn't even top the bathroom scale at 20 lbs. Guess he needs some Dutch kaas. It appears that one way Egan Russell will live up to his name is with red hair. His hair appears to be my color and I'm quite happy about that! Jake thinks that except for his chin (obviously Sewall) that his checks, nose eyes, eyebrows (or lack there of) and hair are all Kraal.

Egan has a little twinkle in his eye and can raise his left eyebrow. He gives you this knowing looks that says, 'you don't know what you are in for!' This year has truly been joyful with our little bitty boy. We love you very much.

Bitty Boy's Birthday Bash

Egan turns one!

In honor of his first birthday we had some of Egan's favorite foods, including watermelon, ground beef (tacos), and grated cheese. We celebrated his first birthday with our friends Laura and Sierra for dinner and then had cake. Unlike Elena, he didn't cry when eating his birthday cake, instead he devoured it!

He thought it was quite amusing to take part of his cupcake and shove it under his high chair tray, then pull it back out like a surprise.

On to the presents....The classic flip toy was popular

As was his UNR football from Grandpa Dwaine.

We concluded with a picture of Egan on the couch - this time last year, it was quite a different story!

First Day of Kindergarten

Less than 30 minutes old, here are the photos from Elena going to her first day of Kindergarten.

(I am kicking myself for taking the small camera, not the good one because the pictures aren't in focus!!!!!)

Elena was up at 6am this morning (and midnight last night) in anticipation of the big day. She picked her clothes out. Bunny was stashed in the backpack for the first week. Lunch packed. Jake and I walked her (and our bikes) to school. We were told to say goodbye on the walk way where the kids get off the bus and not to go inside. so that is what we did. After she kissed us goodbye she walked all the way down by herself and right in the door. She didn't even glance back at us. We both managed not to cry, although I seriously thought I was going to have to get off my bike because I felt sick! I can't believe our little girl is a brave kindergartener.

We'll post full details later....but wanted to get the 'newsbreak' out right away.

Grandma Joan

Grandma Joan
AKA Cannonball Grandma, Garage Sale Grandma, Hip Grandma
April 12, 1934 - August 15, 2009

My favorite memories of Grandma Joan:
- Flying kites on the beach at Neskowin Oregon on vacation with my grandparents and my brother Seth when I was around 10 years old.
- Spying on Aunt Kim and Mom through binoculars to see if they had stopped for icecream on their walk
- Playing taboo and rummikub by the pool at Greaegle
- Egan kicking Grandma through my belly last summer as we snuggled on the couch
- The way she could say 'huh' and try to look innocent when she had done something - like hide the tootsie rolls
- That she rather than share her movie treats - always popcorn, diet coke, and junior mints - with you,she would just hand you money to buy your own. Even if you just wanted one sip, or a single junior mint.
- Having a Grandma who dressed so well that I loved to 'shop' in her closet
- When she and Grandpa Dwaine garage sale shopped for weeks and drove the pickup over to Santa Cruz to help me furnish my first apartment in graduate school
- That when ever she was with you, the perfect parking spot always magically appeared
- All of the weekends Jake and I would stay in Reno to ski in Tahoe and they would have dinner waiting for us
- Having all my grandparents at my PhD defense
- That Grandma and Grandpa never let a birthday, anniversary, or important event pass without a card. In fact the very day after Grandma died, we checked the mail to find Jake's birthday package.

Jake's favorite memory of Grandma Joan is when she accidently gave him Grandpa's winter coat as a present (she thought she'd bought it at a garage sale for $5) and then once we all realized what happened, tried to convince Jake to keep it. (he mailed it back, in case you were wondering)

Elena's favorite memory is going to the pool and getting her bike with a kids seat. (and I will also note that though she didn't mention it - she keeps all the musical cards that they have sent over the years and plays them until their little batteries run out).

Egan's memory of Grandma is through the gentle tummy rubs when he was still incubating and that his first piece of mail ever came from them.

Over the past few days I've unpacked enough boxes to find a few photo albums and the picture that Grandma Joan painted for me. It is extraordinarily difficult to not be with my extended family right now in Reno - I know they are all sharing some really wonderful memories.

You can read the her official obituary

Berenstain Bears Moving Day

Since Elena is a veteran of so many moves, we have a library of moving books to help with the transition. There are the little critters moving, books of maps, books about the places we have been and then are going. By far, the most popular is The Berenstain Bears Moving Day.

The Berenstain Bears live up in a cave on Great Bear Mountain - and though there are many wonderful things, it's time to move. Everything goes in the truck, but the friends. When the Bears arrive at their new home, they have a new little tree house, that needs a bit of work, but momma and poppa bear have 'big plans' (sound familiar?). The truck is unloaded and the bears start to settle in. Then they are greeted by their neighbors, the local bird, squirrel, and bear families come rushing to meet them with gifts of honey and nuts and there are tons of cubs to play with.

Now it is usually here in the story that we explain to Elena that your moving van is not met by hoards to people bringing gifts, it is just a way of showing that with time you will make new friends. That is unless you happen to be moving to Kutztown. In the first week that we arrived Kurt (new colleague and chair of the search committee that hired us) brought over a 6 pack of homebrew and a loaf of fresh bread, Lara and Sierra (new geology faculty who lives down the street with her daughter) brought an apple pie, Richard (next door neighbor) loaded us his pick up truck for a dump run, Jon and Perma (across the street) brought a coffee cake, Donna and Jim (across the alley) a plate of cookies, and, my personal favorite because it was hot and he heard we were painting, Earl (across the ally) brought us a cold case of miller lite (and really cold beer in PA is no small feat, we have learned). What am I forgetting? Oh yes, the cubs...within three houses, there are two other kindergarteners, a 2nd and 5th grader who run around in the evenings together catching fire flies and playing hide and seek. Elena used all her courage and ran off with them - to be rewarded with arms around her shoulders and pats on her back from the bigger kids before the screaming games continued.

Who knew that page of the book could be true.

Austin Highlights

The kids and I had a great time in Austin. A few highlights were:

**Warning blogger is doing some weird crop of my photos, so you'll have to use your imagination on some of them**

Having morning coffee/hot cocoa with Gram on the front porch and reading the paper.

Catching up with the Dennington Family.

Aaron and I were buds back in junior high and high school and have stayed in touch over the years.

He and his wonderful wife Jessica have three great kids. We met up at the pool one evening and the kids all had a blast playing together.

Titus, Elena, and Aaris hit it off right away and spend most of the evening running around like crazy.

While Skylyn and Egan just focused on hanging out and chewing on their hands.

Making popcorn in the popcorn machine with gram

Wagon rides in the back yard

Father's day in the park with Uncle Seth and Aunt Shell. Especially the part where uncle Seth backed into the fountain and got all wet!

Ktown and Beantown

After our whirlwind tour of Austin, Jake drove to meet us as the Philly airport (love that direct Southwest flight!) We took the nice drive (just a bit over an hour) to the Kutztown area. The next morning we closed on our house (see previous post), then enjoyed some time exploring our new stomping grounds.

Kutztown University has a great fountain to play in. The kids loved it. It is right outside Jake and I's office building. Why do I think we'll need to keep a towel and dry clothes in our offices?

Then it was off for a drive to Boston...My first trip to Beantown!...So that we could attend a wedding for Jason Warburg. Jake and Jason were best friends in 1st grade, so there were a lot of funny stories to hear. It was a nice time and we enjoyed the city a great deal!

We stayed at the Colonnade - it was a lovely hotel. Their 'mascot' is Collette the rubber ducky. There were extra duckies everywhere once they learned we had kids. Three in Egan's pack-n-play, on the bed, in the bath. And extras from the waiters at every meal! Egan thinks ducks are tasty.

Speaking of ducks...there's a family of ducks! We visited the much anticipated Make way for ducklings statues in the Boston Common and Elena took a swan boat ride with Big Opa.

Our House

is a very very very fine house.

With two [kids] in the yard.

It was not easy, there ended up being real estate lawyers involved, but on June 24th we closed on our first home! (and hopefully last--we aren't keen on repeating this process soon.)

It's a three bedroom 'oversized' cape (that's oversized for the 50's). One and half bath. The house has original plaster walls and arched doors. Wood floors in every room but the kitchen and bathrooms. Basement has been partially renovated (future playroom). Detached garage. It sits on a half acre, exactly between the Kutztown schools (elementary, middle, and high school) and our office building on campus. A five minute walk to each. Eventually (in the next two years) we will need to add on a larger kitchen, mudroom, make the full bath a half bath, and a 4th bedroom - but for now, we are just excited to get moved in! August 1st, here we come!

On Earth as it is in Austin....

If this is not a slice of brisket heavan with a mug of joy, I don't know what is.

I love it that my parents live in Austin, it is a fabulous place to visit. The kids and I have been having a wonderful time hanging out at the pool, eating at all my favorite spots (Artz, Maria's Taco Express, Amy's...just to name a few!), and getting spoiled by Gram and Opa. We've been able to hang out with friends and family. Yes, it is hot. Damn hot. Africa hot. I am reminded why I was glad to not spend my first summer here, but that is what cold Shiner is for, right?

A few select photos of our trip so far:

The kids dig in to their Artz Ribs at dinner with Uncle Seth and Aunt Shell. Egan liked the chopped beef and wonder bread. Elena liked the 'pig' and rootbeer.

Elena and Opa checking out the Austin Zoo (a rescue zoo). Up close and personal with the lions.

Egan goes to town in the Austin Children's Museum (very cool place!)

Elena takes in her first live music show at Maria's Taco Express while we wait for our order...it was Gospel Sunday with the Hippie Church playing.

Summer Vacation

This summer, in our tradition of never having a simple move, we are filling the calendar with complex plans. The weekend of June 13th the kids and I fly to Austin (alone - if you hear screaming over head, it is probably me....) for 10 days. I'm so excited! Jake can't come, so we won't mention the chicken tortilla soup a Cuerros, Maria's Taco Xpress, Margies on the deck, Artz rib house, Central market, fresh tortillas, free baby sitting, Austin live music....Jake will be attending new faculty summer camp (a workshop for new faculty) in Williamsburg. Then Jake drives up to PA to pick me and the kids up from the Philly airport and we all drive to Kutztown (now referred to a Ktown!) to interview nannies and CLOSE ON OUR FIRST HOUSE! Then it is off to Boston for a weekend vacation to visit the Boston Commons and Make way for ducklings statues and attend a wedding of a friend of Jake's from highschool. Then we keep on going for Weld, Maine and a whole month at the lake house. Richard and Dinny have set up a office for us in the new boat house, so we will be able to work on our classes between water skiing and sailing (or napping in the hammock, I don't sail until Richard fixes the Highlander so I can nap on the deck there). Egan will eat sand. Elena will follow Jane around. Then at the end of July, Jake and richard fly back to Blacksburg, load the truck and drive it up to Ktown. I drive down with the kids from Maine (alone in the car for a whole day - can you say DVD player?). My parents arrive in Kutztown to help us settle in and unpack.

Don't we have great parents! They thought they were done when we moved out of college the last time - wrong! We pay them with grandchildren cuddles....it seems to work.

Egan's 9 mo stats

Egan had his 9 month appointment (just a smidge over 8 months).

He is 16 lb 4 oz and 26 inches long. Down to the 5% - 'he's just a little guy.' But what a sweet heart! Right now Egan is very into grabbing with one hand and manipulating things. His other favorite thing is to chew....toys, pacies, and FOOD. He's got no interest in baby food (unless it is cheerios) and no interest in anything except what you are eating. Case in point, last night we had risotto with carrots and radish greens (elena grew them herself!). He gobbled up nearly a half cup and slept great! (yum, cheesy carbs). Tonight we had hamburgers and fries (trying to meet one of elena' friends at 5 guys) - and no interest in his risotto because we were eating something else. He will eat chili with bean and hamburger, but only if you are eating chili. A few solid bets are mini pumpkin muffins, oatmeal pancakes, watermelon, and cheerios. Everything else is on a sister test basis....as in if sister is eating it, so will I. He likes to sit around and pretend chew if you are eating and he isn't. We are trying to figure out what he is doing about nursing....he's still breast feeding about 8 times a day (especially in the heat), but is starting to replace nursing with meals.

Egan is still a little snuggle bug and loves to cuddle in bed in the morning and play with his paci, grab his toes and give you pet. He is starting to babble and will often 'talk' himself to sleep. He has also started to grow up - he's getting bored in the house! (don't worry kiddo, our summer will take care of that boredom!)

He isn't crawling but is starting to strategically flop and roll. We are betting in another month we will have to secure the stereo equipment. We are signing with him, but we aren't as good as we were with elena, so who knows if/when he will get it. Elena loves to do it though. He loves water and his baths but is starting to dislike diaper changes.

Our little dumpling! Sorry for no pictures, but we are going slightly insane here.

Bee our guest

Elena wrote a poem about her birthday.

In case you can't read the photo, it says:

BIRTHDAY POEM
by Elena Sewall

May 8th is coming soon
Beehive...it's a beehive cake.
The cake is going to bake.
The frosting is going to make the bees, bzzzz.
We are going to celebrate with people...
Papa and Momma and Egan
And other people too.
Xander, Brad, Kirsten, and Mia.
There's a birthday dinner.
Meatloaf, pasta, milk, and salad.
Yummy!

How can you argue with that?

So, it was made as the queen bee wished.

5 Years Old

What a great year for Elena. Elena has grown in many ways this year. Certainly her legs have grown! She is tall and lanky. She barely tops 38 lbs, but reaches up to . This is a small problem in that she is about to out grow the height of her car seat, but still doesn't weigh enough for the next model up! This year she seems to have increased in strength over coordination. She is always trying to help carry in the biggest grocery bag or lift the largest box. In the past few weeks her goal has been to make it all the way across the monkey bars by herself at school - and she's done it several times! She has incredible endurance (it should be noted though this does not appear to be a unique characteristic, if my observations of her peers is correct.)

Socially Elena is much more mature. She has gained more control over her emotions in the past year. She is better able to express her anger, frustration, and concerns using words that actually mean what she is going through. Her temper tantrums have noticably decreased in intensity and duration. Often is takes her an initial outburst, then reminder, but she can find the control to express what she needs. Elena is also more mature in groups. Last year she really outgrew her shyness, this year she has really grown into her personality with her peers and friends. She will interact with kids on the playground that she doesn't know. At school, her teacher tell us that she is a class leader who plays with all the kids. Often she will say something like, 'Maggie and I had a problem at the tire swing, but then we just worked it out.' Her best friend, by far, at school is Mia. They are playing together on the playground almost every day when I pick Elena up. And Elena seems to have recognized that friendship is complex. Sometimes she and Mia 'have a rough day' and fight. Sometimes Mia has a bad day and Elena will tell us all about it (tattle tale!). But what made a huge impression in me was several months ago Elena had a rough day and she was mean to Mia. That night she was very distraught that she was mean to her friend, 'But momma, Mia is my BEST friend, and I was mean to her.' Last year she wouldn't have been able to think about that beyond it happening. This time she wrote out a card and ran in the next morning to give a hug and say she was sorry to Mia.

Of course, on of the biggest changes this year has been to our family - with the addition of Elena's little brother, Egan. Adding a sibling has got to be one of the most difficult things (I don't specifically recall my own experience, but I'm sure I harbor scars!) Really, Elena embraced this huge life change with wonderful grace and love. She adores Egan and rarely seems to angry or frusterated about the changes be brought with him. She started by calling him 'little pinto bean' then 'little brother' and now, since he can sit up and play a bit more now she calls him 'my brother.'

Elena has always been determined, but I often wondered if it was because of all the things we put her through (hey, let's move to a non english speaking country and dump you into daycare at age 1.5 - doesn't that sound like fun!). This year several things really showed that this girl has grit and determination in her blood. Take, for example, her decision to stop sucking her thumb. Once she made that decision for herself, she never went back on it. Not once did I find her sucking her thumb. It was hard, I was ready to start sucking MY thumb. Then her little brother arrives. What a huge change! She pushed through that like a champ. And, she has a frighenly high pain tolerance. She has been quite obsessed with shots. This year she got her first round of shots that she can 'remember.' The nurse had Jake holding her arms in a 'bear hug' and was desperately trying to distract her and get her to look away from her leg (shot location). Elena refused she was determined to watch every detail from the shot coming out of the package to the bandaid going on. Finally the nurse gave in, injecting her while Elena never flinched and watched the whole thing. Then we got to 'play shot' for the next 5 weeks. As for me, I have to lay down when I get a shot a feel woozy watching ER. I wonder if she will be an endurance athlete? Once she puts her mind to something, the decision is made.

Of course, sometime she puts her mind to things we would prefer her not to, like having a temper tantrum melt down. This year we started a new program called 'Magic 123' - she gets counted to 3, then has a timeout the length of her age. We've used timeout, etc before, but this program seems to work well because it is so consistent between Jake and I. What is amazing is the rage of a tantrum she can have. Now, they have decreased in intensity quite a bit (and we haven't had to replace the door on her room...yet...but did take out all furniture that could be thrown). In the past few months, most of the time she has her time out and comes right back out. The 'fits' are much more rare. But, when she puts her mind to being mad and there is no way around it. Here's hoping she takes up running soon.....

This year Elena really started to write. I feel like I'm spelling every other word at this point (as you can probably tell from these blog entries - spelling is NOT my strong suit). In the beginning of the year we would have to write out what elena wanted to say, then she would copy it. Now she can write words from sound as we spell them out and she has a couple memorized. Just last week she told me how Mia helped her learn how to spell some new words. Elena also has started to like chapter books. We read a lot of the Magic Tree House series. She still loves her shorter books - basically she loves books. Probably her favorite non-chapter book is Skippy John Jones. We can't wait until she is old enough (and by that we mean not scared of things) to read Harry Potter and Ronald Dalh books!

Elena is still into detailed roll playing. She will turn just about anything into just about anything. She really wants her own computer.....but no dice kiddo. We really limit her screen time. So she made on out of cardboard. She loves to play waitress...she gets out her tray and a gardening tool belt with pockets and a pen/pad to take orders. When we eat out, she carefully watches the servers. Then when she gets home, she tried to mimic what they have done and said. After Egan a was born, she liked to play 'doula' asking us questions about how breastfeeding was going and filling out a 'wellness' chart.

Of course, elena's other claim to fame is her ridicilously large vocabulary. She loves to copy large words. It's quite amusing to hear her say, 'probably these possibilities are not so good.' She also loves to gesture with her hands while she is talking. In particular, she will make a little circle motion with her hand, the other firmly planted on her hip with her leg tipped and pointed out. When she wants you to agree with her (always) she will raise her eyebrows in this encouraging wink, as if to say, 'this is the part where you say 'yes.''

I think we will always recall this year as special because it was right before she heads off into the 'big outside' world, starting kindergarden, we are even thinking of soccer or choir, too. (of course, we don't want to over schedule!) Right now, she still can be found in the back yard flying high through the air on her swing - carefree and determined at the same time.

Solution

In physics, you can solve for the forces acting on one body fairly easily. But when you have two bodies, they interact the the solution becomes increasingly complex.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-body_problem

In the sciences there is a phenomenon that has been termed the 'two body problem.' Many academics marry other academics. This is particularly true for women - in my field something like 75% of the women with PhD's are partnered with other people with PhD's. The phrase was started in physics, where it was first noticed that almost all female PhD's were married to other PhD's in physics. So what happens when two highly driven people with PhD's, years and tens of thousands of dollars invested in their education, defined career goals looking for jobs...it's hard to find two jobs together. Two bodies, and a problem.

Eventually, if you work long enough at a problem, it turns out that you can find a solution.

We are beyond thrilled to announce that we are now a two body SOLUTION.

Two weeks ago, Jake and I accepted two, full time, tenure track offers in the department of physical science at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania. Jake will be focusing on environmental science and I will be focusing on planetary science. The whole family went up to visit. Elena checked out her new school and kindergarden. Jake and I made an offer on our first house! (keep your fingers crossed).

In spite of all the stress with this decision, we both feel incredible at this point. It is such a wonderful relief to be a solution. To have a place where we can both work on our career goals and where we can raise our family!

4 Days, 2 Teeth

Saturday night, Egan was chewing on my finger and I felt something sharp...his first little tooth popped through. Today I had him on my lap laughing and saw the the second one popped through. Both bottom teeth. He's not been too fussy...but now enjoys playing with his tongue on his lower gums.

In addition to his new toofers - he is digging into solid foods. He loves to eat! His favorites right now include oatmeal and prunes (hey, a guys gotta stay regular), rice & millet with sauted onion cooked in turkey broth, chicken, gravy & peas, and smashed avacado, pear, squash, sweet potato, and applesauce. He loves his finger foods - likes puffs, bits of biscuit, tater tots, tortilla, rice - he's not a big fan of anything slippery like banana or avacado bits.

6 month update

In the past month or so, Egan has really started to 'grow up.' He can now sit basically unsupported. He likes to hang out in his mosses basket or in a rubbermade tub in the yard. He loves books, they taste so good! He can accurately reach with one hand for an object. He can take his paci out of his mouth, turn it around, play with it, and then figure out how to put it back in.

He's not a big fan of laying down, he really likes to sit up like a big boy! He doesn't really roll over, because he isn't interested on being on his tummy or back long enough to work on it. But he is starting to lean quite a bit and that will probably be what moves him to the next set of skills as he reaches for things.

Egan still nurses ~8 times a day, but also does really well taking a bottle. (yeah!) He goes to bed at about 8pm and wakes up between 7-8 most mornings. He eats several times at night still. He likes to be swaddled to sleep. He can sometimes put himself to sleep at nap or night - but never when sister is home! Too much to try and keep up with. Egan started eating solid foods - he's had rice cereal (terrible), pears, applesauce, prunes, oatmeal, squash, sweet potatoes, and wheat cereal. He is still deciding if these are beauty products or food substances and likes to rub them into his neck folds. About 1 in 4 times he will 'eat' the rest of the time he plays around. Right now we have breakfast and dinner.

Egan loves his nanny, Ashley. He will just sink into her when she arrives. Ashley comes 4 afternoons a week. They like to hang out on the play mat and go for walks. He'd better get on crawling if he wants to take advantage of her varsity college soccer experience!

Last appointment, just a few days before his 6 mo birthday, he was 15 lbs, 25 inches, still hanging out in the 20 percentile. He's mostly wearing 3-6 month clothes, but some 6-9 shirts, etc. He's hair is still thin - sometimes I wonder (hope?) if it looks a bit red in the sunlight. He has an impish grin and can raise on eyebrow for emphasis and encouragement to do things like hand him another magazine to rip up. He is very ticklish - especially in his arm pits and back.

The big 6 months for Egan

On March 24th, Egan turned 6 months old! He celebrated with his first airplane ride:

And taxi ride:

To come with me to Houston, Texas for the Lunar and Planetary Science Conference. We were met there by my mom, who spent 3 days taking care of Egan so I could go to the conference. Egan had a GREAT time with Gram. They had morning cuddles, ate pears, strolled. I find it a little stressful to travel alone with Egan, but it was great not to have to leave him again.

On Friday night, there was some sort of astronomical alignment and not only could my dad drive down, but so could Seth and Michele, and my Aunt Kim happened to be in Houston visiting my cousin Derek who had just moved there! We all had dinner together!

<< I'm having trouble importing all the cute pictures - so I'll have to post them later >>

Egan got to hang out with little opa

and take a snooze on Aunt Shell.

It was a big (annoying) return trip home when we got stranded in Washington DC and it looked like instead of arriving at 5 pm Saturday as scheduled, it would be 8pm Sunday or more likely sometime Monday morning. It was 11pm on Saturday night--I had a hungry, tired baby with me. I was exhausted. Luckily I met another stranded Roanoke passenger, we rented a car together and made to 5 hour drive home. I got in at 5 am. It basically took me all week to recover!

Right before our trip, Jake's Uncle Bob and Aunt Mia visited for the afternoon - we all enjoyed the warm sun.

Happy Easter!

It was a beautiful and sunny Easter Sunday here.

We started off the morning with an egg hunt in the living room. Elena was incredibly patient because Jake made breakfast, letting me sleep in with our little morning snoozer bear, Egan. So poor Elena had to wait for the official basket dive in and egg hunt until we woke up!

Elena went after the eggs.

The Bun thought ahead and left three large clear eggs with pacifiers for Egan. He was happy.

Luckily Egan had his sister to help with his basket.

But don't worry, sister had plenty of goodies her self.

Then we headed to church with Xander and Rita, his Dutch Oma. Another egg hunt!

Egan didn't wear his PJ's all day - we kept him in this adorable sweater vest all day.
